Starting May 7, 2025, all air travelers 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or an acceptable alternative for identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.

  • What is the REAL ID Act? Enacted in 2005, the REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. These standards aim to enhance the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents.
  • What is the enforcement deadline? The enforcement deadline for REAL ID compliance is May 7, 2025. After this date, individuals will need a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification for domestic air travel and to access specific federal facilities.
  • How can you identify a REAL ID-compliant license? They are typically marked with a star at the top of the card, although the specific design may vary by state.
  • Do you know if I need a REAL ID for cruise travel? While a REAL ID is not required to board a cruise ship, passengers must present acceptable proof of identity and citizenship, such as a valid passport or other documents specified by the cruise line. It's essential to verify the specific documentation requirements of the cruise line and the destinations involved.
  • Is a passport still necessary if a passenger has a REAL ID? Yes, a valid passport is required for international air travel. A REAL ID is primarily for domestic air travel and access to certain federal facilities. For international destinations, passengers must carry a valid passport regardless of REAL ID possession.
