Earth Day 2015 Musings

4/22/2015

Today, we met up with Dustin Martin, program director of Wings of America, a non-profit organization based in Santa Fe, N.M.

Wings of America's premise is so cool that we want to share a bit about it.

The organization was founded in the late 1980 by William Channing, and others, in response to environmental concerns of Indigenous Peoples of North America. Since 1988, their programs used sport, and specifically running, to encourage young American Indians to take pride in themselves and their cultural identities, develop healthier lifestyles, and leadership skills, while achieving balance and harmony. Dustin pointed to the rich running history of the Native communities around Santa Fe.

Quoting from their website, "At full stride, Wings athletes break free from the stereotypes and statistics that stifle the ambition of so many Native youth. Instead, these runners use the opportunities they earn with Wings to show that they are the leaders, thinkers, and teachers of tomorrow."

The mind-body connection is pretty powerful. Think about how good one feels when you mastered a new sport or physical activity.

Take a look at Wings of America's website and pass it along.

Our inspiration to you, dear reader, on Earth Day, 2015.
